What To Expect When Applying For Disability

Posted on: 9 January 2020

If you are currently considering filing a disability claim, you may find yourself wondering what the process is like and what you can expect when you are applying. Disability attorneys can help you learn some of the important things to expect from the disability application process. Then, you can feel more prepared as you fill out the application and await your response.

Expect an Answer to Take a While

The disability application process is not a fast one. Most of the time, it takes between 60 and 90 days to get an approval or denial on your initial application. Sometimes, it can take longer. Be prepared to wait a significant amount of time for a response.

This can be frustrating and annoying, but the government receives numerous applications every day. Add to that the fact that they have to gather your medical records and then assess the evidence, and you can start to see why it can take a while to receive a response.

Expect to Receive Additional Forms to Fill Out

Oftentimes, when you apply for disability, the claim processor assigned to your case will need additional information from you in order to properly determine if you are eligible for disability. This means that you will receive additional forms in the mail to fill out. This can include information about your job history and a detailed questionnaire about how your disabling condition affects your daily life.

It is vitally important that you thoroughly and carefully fill out these forms and return them to the disability office as soon as possible. You want to be sure that you include everything on the forms so that the agent has a true picture of your condition and your job history. Returning the forms as soon as possible will also help to keep the application process moving and prevent delays.

Expect to Be Denied on the Initial Application

The vast majority of disability claims are denied on the first round of applications (known as the initial application). This is to be expected. You have the right to and should appeal the decision as soon as you receive your denial letter. This will help to ensure you continue in the application process as quickly as possible.

The next stage is reconsideration, and then the stage after that allow you to have a disability hearing (though some states skip straight to the hearing). You will have the opportunity to present your case and testify to your disability at the hearing stage.

Now that you know some of the things to expect when applying for disability, you can submit your initial application and be as prepared as possible for what is to come.
